Waterproof sealant for metal: Steel the deal

Need to draft-proof your metal roof or fix a leaking gutter? Then reach for some waterproof sealant for metal.

What is waterproof sealant for metal used for?

Waterproof sealant for metal is used to seal joints and fill cracks and gaps, in order to keep moisture, water, dust and dirt out. It also keeps plumbing features, roofs and windows airtight and watertight. The most commonly used product is metal silicone sealant, thanks to its excellent flexibility and ability to withstand expansion and contraction of building materials, but the sealant can also be polymer and rubber-based.

How to use waterproof sealant for metal

  1. Clean. To ensure the best quality seal, clean the area being sealed to remove dirt, grease and debris – including old sealant. Clean the area with white spirit and allow to dry.
  2. Prepare. Cut the tip of the cartridge above the screw thread and trim the nozzle to size. Load the cartridge into a standard cartridge gun. Be cautious when cutting – if the hole is too small at first you can always cut it larger, but not the other way around.
  3. Seal. Starting at one end of the joint you are sealing, gently but firmly squeeze the gun’s trigger and work the tip of the dispenser nozzle along the joint in a smooth, continuous movement.
  4. Dry. Use a tool like UniBond Sealant Smoother tool to smooth the bead of sealant you’ve just applied and compact it into the joint. Leave the sealant to dry as per the product’s instructions.

If you need to get rid of any old sealant from the joint you are working on, cut as much away as possible then UniBond Silicone Sealant Remover is the ideal way to break the remainder down for easy removal. You can also use the UniBond 2in1 Sealant Remover and Smoother Tool to remove all types of sealant without damage.
