Kitchen sealant: Keeping water out

As useful as water is, in the wrong place it can cause no end of problems. Take your kitchen, for instance. You want water coming out of your tap, not seeping between fixtures. Avert any future problems by using the right kitchen sealant.

Kitchen sealant: An explainer

Besides the bathroom, the kitchen is the other place in our homes where condensation, moisture and running water are a daily occurrence. To keep all three from seeping in between fixtures and fittings, a good kitchen sealant is essential. Rubbery in texture and white or translucent in look, it forms a waterproof bond between backsplashes, countertops and sinks that will keep your kitchen safe and dry for years to come.

Selecting the best kitchen caulk

The best kitchen sealant – also known as kitchen caulk – will form a waterproof bond to prevent the possibility of water damage. UniBond Easy Smooth Sealant is flexible as well as waterproof and allows more time for smoothing than normal sealants to achieve the perfect finish. It is specially formulated to function in humid environments such as kitchens and is recommended for use as a kitchen sink and worktop sealant.

For an even stronger barrier, UniBond Triple Protection forms a flexible, mould resistant and waterproof seal to keep your kitchen in pristine condition. Its special formula was rated best in class for anti-mould protection by the Fresenius Institute, one of Europe’s leading providers of non-medical laboratory analysis, and it comes with a 35-year guarantee.

How to use kitchen sealant

It’s always best to take preventative measures before a problem like water ingress really sets in and causes a major problem. Follow these steps to protect your kitchen.

  1. Prepare. Clear the area you are working in of any dust, dirt and debris and ensure it is clean and dry for the strongest seal.
  2. Tape. Apply masking tape to both sides of the joint you are sealing, in order to create a neat bead of kitchen sealant.
  3. Prime. Prime the sealant cartridge by cutting an aperture to match the width of the joint off the tip at a 45-degree angle with Unibond’s 2-in-1 Smoother & Cutter tool, then load it into a sealant gun.
  4. Apply. Apply the kitchen sealant with steady pressure on the sealant gun’s trigger, aiming it into the joint.
  5. Tool. To achieve the best seal possible, use UniBond’s 2-in-1 Smoother & Cutter tool to smooth over the bead of kitchen sealant and compact it into the joint before it’s dried. You can scrape off any excess sealant in stages as you smooth the bead over.
  6. Finish. Remove the tape and leave the sealant to cure for the time specified in the product’s instructions.
