How to hang kitchen cabinets: A great new look for your kitchen!

How to hang kitchen cabinets: The first steps

Getting started can be intimidating. Once you’ve gutted your kitchen, the real work begins, so, if you’re not sure how to start installing kitchen cabinets, here are the first steps.

1. Locate the studs with a stud finder. Mark the studs and draw a line through them, this will help you to install your kitchen cabinet/s in the right place.
2. Locate the electrical sockets and pipes. You’ll want to install your cabinets with these in mind.
3. Examine the walls that you want to install the cabinets on. If you need to, paint or repair them before you start installing kitchen cabinets.
4. Make the measurements. Using a tape measure, write down the dimensions of the cabinet.
5. Mark where the cabinet/s will go on the wall. The measurements will be different depending on whether you’re fitting a hanging cabinet or a lower cabinet.  

How to install lower cabinets

Once you’ve made the measurements and marked out where your kitchen cabinets will go, you’re ready to get started with installing them.

1. Install any corner cabinets first.
2. Find the studs on the back of the next cabinet. You need to make sure you fit the cabinet in the middle of the stud.
3. Pre-drill holes in the back of the new cabinets according to where the studs are.
4. Put the cabinet into place. Using a spirit level, check whether your cabinets are straight. If needed add shims either under or behind the cabinet to straighten it up. 
5. Screw the cabinets into place. Tip: don’t tighten the screws completely yet, just make sure that your cabinet is held to the wall (see step 7).
6. Repeat steps 2-5 for all additional cabinets.
7. Tighten screws once all of your cabinets are in place.
8. Put in your countertop.
